Tanglewood Music Festival

Tanglewood Music Festival. Created in 1934 by a group of music-loving, summer residents of the Berkshires, the Tanglewood Music Festival was originally intended to be a one-time series of three outdoor concerts performed at Interlaken. However, the concerts were so successful that the promoters decided to make the festival an annual summer event and with the donation by the Tappan Family of their large estate, the Tanglewood Music Festival was born.

Concerts at Tanglewood

Today, Tanglewood draws over 350,000 annual visitors for concerts from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, weekly chamber music concerts, open rehearsals, the annual Festival of Contemporary Music, and recitals from gifted young musicians at the Tanglewood Music Center. Offering three days of phenomenal music performed in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, the festivals stunning grounds,with views of rolling green hills and a vast lawn, offer a unique venue for visitors. Their wide range of visitor facilities and activities, exhibits, cafs, and special events amidst the inspiring sounds of music all make for a spectacular experience.

Tanglewood Hall Activities

Tanglewood offers several activities in addition to their regular summer concert series. The Tanglewood Association gives free public walking tours of the Tanglewood campus during the summer season. The tours consist of a 1-hour walk through the Tanglewood grounds with visits to the Koussevitzky Music Shed, Seiji Ozawa Hall and the Visitor Center history rooms. Guides discuss the history of Tanglewood, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Music Center Tours are held on Wednesdays at 10:30am and Saturdays at 1:30pm and run throughout the summer season. Tanglewoods Talks Walks series is a set of informal conversations presented by guest artists and members of the Tanglewood family in the Tent Club each Thursday at 1pm.
